This chapter is aptly named The Great Panic. It is about the full scale
reactions of the people and governments, people fleeing and governments
enacting desperate plans both great and terrible. Demonstrating many of the
hardships faced by the people as they attempted to run from the zombies not knowing
where their final destination is but rather running as primal panic and fear
takes hold. Some desperately fleeing to the ocean with hordes of zombies behind
them. Others journeying north and the hardships that such a trip brought them.
It also shows how effective proper knowledge and foresight was. The governments
did not have it any easier, enacting plans that involved killing many of its
own citizens begging the question, does the end justify the means? The answer
was yes, survival is a must.
I thought this was a great chapter, it
really paints the desperate picture portrayed by the situation, drawing you in
with horrid tales of survival and hard decisions made across the world from
great to small. My favorite part was no doubt at the end where the US Government
attempted to make a stand against the Zombies. It really helps understand why
this could happen to such a degree despite all the firepower the Military has.
They initially had no idea of how to fight, many weapons didn't work, Old
tactics used incorrectly and information that was wrong or just better off not
known. Also it reminds us that even in the darkest and most terrible wars it
was soldiers who fought in them and soldiers who were still human and the feelings
and emotions that come with being human. Facing the zombies denies everything
taken for granted was proven wrong. Every mistake was harshly punished costing
the lives of citizens.
